SM Headline: SCCA hosting its third racing event this weekend at Legacy
The Utah region of the Sports Car Club of America is hosting its third weekly auto-cross racing event in a row with racing starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. The event is being held at the Legacy Events Center in Farmington. The 2016 auto-cross racing schedule has a much higher number of races at Legacy this year than in the past.
“Racing events at Legacy are definitely more popular than others,” said Dylan Hanseen, a participant at the event. “It’s a great location and the surface is better than other places we race. The better the surface, the more fun it is to race on.”
There are reasons other than the surface and the location that make Legacy a great place to race.
“The Legacy staff like it when we come and race there,” said Jory Anderson, a participant at the event. “It is a lot that would otherwise be vacant. We bring money to the event center and to the surrounding businesses when we race. I think we have a pretty big impact on the community there.”
Many events in the past were held at the Maverick Center, but because of certain circumstances, the organization moved those events to Legacy.
“The Maverick center recently resurfaced their parking lot and it made it slippery,” Hanseen said. “The cost to rent the space basically doubled as well. That’s why we are racing at Legacy a lot more.”
Because of the frequency of events, the number of participants fluctuates.
“I think the number of events has an impact on how many people show up,” Hanseen said. “It is a good and a bad thing. It gives racers plenty of events to go to, but we can’t all be racing every weekend either.”
Other racers have a different view about the number of participants at each event.
“The first event of the year there were more than 100 cars,” Anderson said. “I think it’s just because it’s the first event of the year and everyone wanted to be there. I don’t think the number of events has impacted participation.”
Spectators at the events have a different view about attendance.
“If it takes more gas to get to an event I am less likely to go,” said Ty Jelke, a spectator at multiple auto-cross events. “If the event is close to me I am more likely to attend it. I am sure that it impacts others in the same way.”
