SM headline: Check out all the cars and horsepower at Redshift this weekend

Redshift, an automotive performance company in Idaho Falls, Idaho, is hosting its first dyno event of the year Saturday at 9 a.m. With new online registration, more cars are registered than any previous event.

A dyno is a machine that is used to tune and measure the horsepower of a vehicle, said Dan Plambeck, the owner of Redshift. The dyno has a set of large steel rollers that are spun by the wheels of vehicles at high speeds to calculate the horsepower the engine is producing. Vehicles are secured in place with straps while running on the dyno to keep them in place while the wheels are able to spin freely on the rollers.

Many people come to these events to see how much power their car has.

“These events bring a variety of people from a lot of different areas,” Plambeck said. “We will be running from morning until night so all of the cars have a chance to run.”

Because these events can become competitive in nature, some people have a different reason for showing up.

“I like to attend to see how much everybody else sucks and how cool I am,” said Anthony Quintana, a participant in the event. Putting all jokes aside, Quintana likes the competitive nature that can be brought about by events like this. He also attends these events “to meet various people and to see new cars that usually aren’t around.”

Other people come to these events simply to spend time with fellow enthusiasts.

“These events are a big social gathering,” said Myk Adams, a participant in the event. “You get together and just talk about cars and get ideas for what you might want to do with your car.”

Even with a competition at hand, the people attending the event share the idea of gathering together as a community.

“I think it’s important to get people out and bring people together,” Quintana said. “To give people a common bond, while giving them something to see and do.”
