The Utah region of the Sports Car Club of America, also known as SCCA, is hosting an auto-cross racing event Saturday with racing starting at 10 a.m. The event is focused on racing safely.

“Our goal is to get people out here to safely find the limits of their cars,” said Evan Kooda, the registration chief for the event. “You don’t have to be a racecar driver to do this. You can bring a regular car out here and have a great time.”

Participants can ask for a racing instructor to ride along with them at any point during the race. Instructors offer advice and pointers on how the driver can improve, Kooda said.

“I love it because everyone is here to help out,” said Kameron Clements, a racer from Idaho. “There are people here willing to offer advice to anyone to help improve their driving.”

Rod Derrick, a well-known veteran in the auto-cross community, has raced in events all over the country.

“I’m a car nut,” Derrick said. “My goal today is to help as many people as I can and to have a blast. It’s just fun learning to control a car, and here it’s safe.”

The event is located at Legacy Events Center in Farmington. The event will conclude Sunday at 5 p.m.

The Utah region of the Sports Car Club of America will be hosting multiple auto-cross events in Utah throughout 2016. For more information about Utah SCCA events visit http://www.utahscca.com/autocross/schedule.
