SM Headline: Check out Scrapefest, a local car organization's first-ever season opener

The car organization known as Scrapefest is hosting its first season-opening event on Friday with the gates opening at 3 p.m.

“We had an idea and we just ran with it,” said Joe Deutsch, the event director. “This is an opener that we have never done before and it is already bigger that our last show.

Deutsch said that Scrapefest is about bringing the car community together and that all makes and models of cars are welcome to attend the event.

“There is a lot of group unity that you don’t see in other car communities,” said Riley Burke, a first year participant at the event. “A lot of us know each other. It’s a hobby, but it’s also a lifestyle too.”

While the event has attracted many local car owners, there are also people traveling from surrounding states to participate in the show.

“In the past we only had people from Utah and Idaho, but this year there are people here from Nevada, Washington and Arizona,” Deutsch said. “We will have more than 300 cars at this event and between 2,500 and 3,000 spectators.”

Even with many people from out of state participating in the event, many local people have showed up with their cars to support their local car community.

“Just seeing other cars and meeting new people,” is one of the reasons Zoe Moon, an Ogden resident, is participating in the event this year. “You meet people, get advice and sometimes give advice to other people for their cars. It’s a passion and a hobby, and if you win something that’s great too.”

The car show and contests at Scrapefest end on Friday at 7 p.m.
